This week was quiet for concerts for me and due to some unforeseen circumstances shoots were postponed. So I spent a lot of time working on my online vintage camera shop, working on new videos for @pickinnflippin and lots of client consultations but I still found myself in a rut. Going a week without creating new work feels like I’m falling behind so I wanted to create this post as a reminder of how to stay motivated.
1. Choose your path.
“A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance. “
– Hunter S. Thompson
This is a big one for me because I’ve let life pass me by in the past but not anymore. You can either float with the tide or swim for a goal, you decide. Every action you make no matter how small will have an impact on your life whether you realize it or not. Every decision is directly related to floating or swimming, let life pass you by or adventure through it.
2. Be yourself & find your voice.
It’s so easy to see people building their business and their brands and to want to be like them/ have that success, but remember the key is to always be yourself. Above all else, people will be able to tell from a mile away when you’re being fake. The problem is it can be hard to figure out who exactly you are.
This is the one I’m struggling the most with right now cause for a long time I was in a bad spot, I had stopped doing all the things I loved cause some jerk thought it was annoying. So now I feel like I’m at square one, but that’s alright. There will be moments in your journey where you feel completely lost and it’s 100% normal. Don’t get down on yourself, get comfortable in your own skin and doing the things you love.
3. Don’t worry about what everybody else is doing.
Everyone’s on their own path and going through their own journey so don’t get jealous/upset if someone has more followers or seems to be doing “better” than you. So If anything, use it as fuel to kick your ass into gear! Use it as inspiration/motivation to get you to do more or try new things.
4. Do what makes you happy and do it for yourself.
Whatever your dream or goal may be, make sure it is your own. Figure out who you are and what YOUR dreams are. Be careful of pursuing someone else’s dreams or something for the wrong reasons. Find something that makes you happy and that you love doing every day because at the end of the day you are all you really have. People love to share their opinions but once they’re gone from your life, will you still feel satisfied with your choices/ where you are in life?
I battled this for a long time; doing what others expected of me and not what I truly wanted to do myself, what did that get me? A slow start to the career I really wanted, a lot of crying, stress, fatigue, repeated mental breakdowns at work and what I now refer to as my “quarter-life” crisis. This has a lot to do with being yourself and finding your voice, don’t let the naysayers or negative Nelly’s bring you down.
5. Find your spark and keep the fire burning.
Remember why you decided to do this in the first place. You had a moment that something clicked, right? Like a light bulb going off in your head, or a gut feeling follower by your heart started racing from the excitement. You were so eager to start and learn but now you feel bored and uninspired.
So get up. Go out and try something new.
You’ve only in a rut if you let yourself get stuck. There is so much going on around you. You might be standing still but the world doesn’t stop so if you’re bored of what you do you can only blame yourself. Join a group or community that provides support for people in your field. Look for new tricks or techniques you want to try or try collaborating with someone new. There are always more opportunities to grow and learn, There is no limit to the things we can achieve or accomplish. Your only limitations are the ones you put on yourself.
